Short strokes have ragged edges at the beginning and end. There is a slight variation in the size and brightness of bristles. The green and pink dabs made with the Acrylic Clumpy Brush are squeezed ovals, like plump grains of rice. The following variants made the dabs and strokes shown in Figure 1.15.Īcrylic: Clumpy BrushOils: Fine CamelImpasto: Smeary Bristle Spray As you did with the Acrylics Wet Brush earlier, notice how strokes interact with each other. Take a couple of variants from each of those categories for a test drive. They include Acrylics, Oils, and Impasto (Italian for thick paint). There are several Painter categories devoted to bristle-type brushes. The kind of mark made by a bristle brush depends on a large number of factors: quality and number of bristles, viscosity and amount of paint loaded, and the pressure and direction of the artist’s stroke. Traditional paintbrushes can have a variety of shapes and are composed of numerous bristles that can range in length, thickness, and stiffness. For a photo of this grip see Figure 3.3 in Chapter 3, “Have Another Layer,” where you’ll use this technique in an illustration project. This imitates sketching and shading with the side of a pencil or pigment stick. It’s possible to make a very wide stroke if you change your grip so that the pen is at a steep angle. Marks made with the Wacom pen held upright are thin lines, but as you tilt your pen the lines become wider. Have you tried the Real 6B Soft Pencil yet? Look once again at the strokes in the bottom row of Figure 1.13. And once again, David…thank you so much for your generosity.Buy a copy of Digital Painting Fundamentals with Corel Painter 12 I think I have some videos somewhere, probably You Tube, about making Ebru like images in Painter. Other groups of people used the same techniques. Google it and learn more, there’s even a few videos about it on You Tube. In case you didn’t know, Suminagashi is an ancient Japanese paper marbling technique. I altered the velocity of the stroke to showcase the different look at different speeds. In this example, I used Life Form for the top stroke and Life Form Mono for the bottom stoke. Use a slower stroke speed to produce a more closed, tubular form, and faster strokes to give a more open “backbone” effect. The Color Variability Panel randomizes the colors/values within the strokes. The strokes produced by the Life Form and Life Form Mono variants appear alien, hence the name. Suminagashi and Suminagashi Grad Variants I thought I would give you a few tips copied from David’s JitterBrush site about those variants. Many folks have requested Suminagashi 2 category included in the library.

Some of David’s brushes are pretty complex and need a bit of explanation. You will need to switch back and forth between libraries.

To install these brushes, first download the above file and save it to your computer, then open Painter, go to the Menu Bar and select Brushes > Import > Brush Library and select the downloaded file. With many thanks to David here is David Gell Brush Library. But, I have always loved David’s variants, old or new, so I have kept them over the years. This library contains 28 brush categories and some of them are quite old and haven’t been available for some time. I created a David Gell Brush library so that I could have all of his variants in one place. I have followed David’s Painter tutorials since I started using Painter and most of what I know about brushes comes from his generous sharing. Well…since today is my birthday, I thought I would pass David’s gift to my blog readers. He did give me permission to post all of them for you. Many of David’s brushes were on his site, JitterBrush, but he took the site down and his variants were not available on-line.

And at least a year ago I promised to post brushes created by David Gell, who I consider to be the best brush master ever. I know…I have been a very bad person and neglected my blog…sigh.
